H&O is approved to oversee the building control process across England & Wales. Our extensive experience has led us to be involved in numerous fascinating building and refurbishment projects, for our fantastic client base and construction industry colleagues.
LEEDS
The Queens Hotel is a large hotel located on City Square in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Built in 1937, it is an elegant Art Deco Grade II listed building and was frequented by the likes of Princess Grace of Monaco, Cary Grant, and Nelson Mandela throughout its history.
H&O oversaw the building control process in late 2021. Covering a full refurbishment, alterations to the common areas and modernisation of the bedroom accommodation.
WORTHING WEST SUSSEX
Browns is a Natural Pet Store & Ethical Pet Spa, , based in West Sussex. This high end and large retail fit out, used wooden finishes and mostly natural materials.
Browns won ‘Pet Industry Federation – Retailer of the Year 2020’ shortly after the store opened.
H&O were pleased to be appointed as the projects Approved Inspector, working closely with the client and designers to meet the buildings regulation requirements.
PENDERYN
The Penderyn whisky distillery and visitor centre project involved the conversation and extension of a Grade II Listed former Boarding School built around 1873 in Llandudno Wales.
The village of Penderyn was chosen because of their own supply of fresh natural spring water. The Distillery features a unique copper single pot still designed by Dr David Faraday and was recently featured in season 16 of the BBC show The Apprentice.
As the building control body, H&O had to account for visitors, masterclasses and tours of the stunning premises.
LONDON
Alphabeta Building (formerly known as Triton Court) is a large office development in Finsbury Square, London EC2. The recent project saw the transformation of 220,000 sq ft of office space for creative, media and technology occupiers. An extension and additional 22,000 sq ft of A1 retail and restaurant space over the ground and basement floors.
The scheme, a complex ‘mixed use building’, required extensive structural alterations and building control assistance in respect to meeting the fire safety and accessibility requirements.
LONDON
Side by Side School is a community school offering a unique environment for speech & language, occupational, music and physiotherapists for children with learning difficulties. Therapy teams work to support children to be able to integrate and spend time in one of the local mainstream schools providing an opportunity to learn and play with children of similar age. The ongoing project is the erection of this specialist four storey school building. Aiming to raise the self-esteem of the pupils, develop their social skills to allow them to feel part of the wider community.
Noting the culture of the existing team H&O are proud to work with such a dedicated cause. We have worked alongside our client JP Kennedy Construction Ltd to assist with the challenges of such a school with children who may not be able to evacuate without assistance.
LONDON
Hakkasan Mayfair is a Michelin star restaurant over ground floor and basement in the heart of Mayfair off Berkeley Square. It is a unique Chinese restaurants combining traditional dishes with western dining experience. The restaurant has a distinctive interior designed by the French designer Christian Liaigre with Gensler the principal architect and the brief was fusing modern aesthetic with traditional Chinese motifs.
With a relatively complex fire strategy, accessibility difficulties the premises is an example of Building Control working with a high end client to provide an amazing end result. The Cornish slate feature stairs is stunning addition and worth a visit alone.
LONDON
The project involves the significant renovation and extensions to an existing period property, set in the Hampstead Garden Suburb. The Trust ensures that the properties in the suburb maintain their architectural standards, which is evident by external appearance of the retained elevation to this property.
The roof replacement and extension, as well as the side extension, maintain the character, whilst significantly altering and adding to the dwellings internal footprint and layout. Improvements to the thermal elements, structure, and services, forming a large part of the building regulation works.
Major works have occurred with a new hidden basement, requiring at points double depth excavation and underpinning sequence, to achieve a swimming pool, gym and further accommodation, as desired by the private clients, again whilst not detracting from the charter of this improving property.
We have worked with H&O on two recent commercial projects, and we have been given an excellent service with clear communication and information as well as a friendly, can-do attitude. Highly recommend!
